Nerd/Geek Harrassment of Store Employees

“If you could have any “singular” super power, (the ability to have all super powers and the ability to take other peoples super powers are not eligible): What super power would you have?”

This question was queried to several employees of stores we visited today with surprising responses.

STORY:I went shopping around town with my husband today. Nothing big. Just some shipping boxes, tape, labels, simple things. Several stores around town. Just enjoying a day when we both had time of and the sun was up. We went to the local Navy exchange and one thing I learned when out shopping is to NOT get a shopping cart. If I pile his arms full of things to buy he won’t wonder away, break things (on accident while fiddling with them {trying to figure out how they are made}) or otherwise cause mayhem. On this trip on the Navy base he had his arms full of packaging materials and I was contemplating new shelving for fabric storage when a store employee caught his eye and asked if we needed any help.

Mind you he has an extremely high IQ, is a fanatic for comics, video games, electronics, computers, the occult, fantasy, and the arts. Throw in a Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons  and you’ve got yourself a handful of mental weirdness in there (here’s to hoping any children we {will never} have are only half as smart as their father). Think Sheldon from “The Big Bang Theory” and stick him in the US Navy and there you have it.

Back to the story.

He immediately latched on to the store employee as a way to expel boredom and asked the following question:

“If you could have any “singular” super power, (the ability to have all super powers and the ability to take other peoples super powers are not eligible): What super power would you have?”

Walmart Employee #1: The ability to Time Travel
Walmart Employee #2: The ability to make anything “appear”
Office Depot Employee: The ability to see though anything
Navy Exchange Employee #1: The ability to never get a red light when driving
Navy Exchange Employee #2: The ability to be a fly on the wall/ hidden
Navy Exchange Employee #3: The ability to fly
Navy Exchange Employee #4: The ability to shape shift (my husbands choice)

NOBODY SAID ANYTHING ABOUT GETTING RICH OR ROBBING BANKS UNSEEN.

Interesting……

After reading your response to the judgemental doctor, I wanted to thank you for being so fantastic and open. Many of my friends (and myself) are "alternative", and reading your reply was very heartening. I hope your friend is okay -- my mother was in a terrible car accident, breaking her hip, and laying in traction for 6 months. Could you pass on my well-wishes to her?

@ Wonderwomanproject:

I am sorry to hear about your Mother. Car accidents are never a good thing. Send her my blessings!

Amy is a tough Cookie. <3 her. Lets see. She posted this earlier on fb:

“i’ll admit it. i’m scared. i know this isnt as big of a surgery as the one i had before on my leg, but i am still so scared, to the point of tears every time i think about it. i am scared that something bad will happen. that there will be more damage than they thought. that i could not wake up. that this is going to increase the pain i am in. that the bones are not cured enough for them to remove these 2 pins and it will shatter again. just scared. really scared.”

Anyone would be scared of even more surgery but I am sure she will be fine. Here is to hoping the Dr. cares enough to drop his prejudice and do his job. :/

(I asked her if I could share that first in case you are wondering :).

I can't believe a doctor insulted your friend like that who was in pain! I just don't understand how people can be so judgemental! I truly hope that on her road to recovery nothing like that happens again! I wish her a speedy recovery! Also I wanted to ask you I am an Uk british Army wife do you ever that usually your the only goth on the barracks that would be my problem.

@Blacktinged:

Amy has another appointment this week to take out 2 screws from her leg. I will be taking her in again. It is about a 6 hour outpatient procedure so we are hoping for the best. I will pass on the blessings and wishes :)

Hmm, about being the only goth aboard a military instillation yes, It is uncomfortable at times but most of the time as soon as they see my hearse they are more interested in lifting the hood and staring at the new engine that we usually don’t have that much of a problem. More often than not I end up standing outside of the Navy exchange while a couple Sailors “hem & haw” over the V8 in the hearse than worry about what they think :) Best wishes to you and your partner in the UK British Army!

Open Letter to: Dr Robert Clawson of Seattle Bone and Joint Center (from an "Alternative Lifestyle" Woman)

Dr. Clawson,

I first would like to start off with a little info on my good friend Amy Whims in case you cannot remember which patient you insulted yesterday:

image

Amy was hit by a car on the 14th of march, 2011 as a pedestrian crossing the street in the crosswalk. The 23yr old woman who hit her was going roughly 35mph. Her leg was broken and shattered in a few places- the tibial plateau was crushed, and the tibia itself has a lateral fracture 1/2 way down her leg. She currently has 9 pins, 6 plates, 2 screws and lots of cadaver bone holding her together. She spent 10 days in the hospital, and just about 3 months in a nursing home. She now has permanent nerve damage, and bursitis in her hip needing cortisone injections, and now an upcoming surgery to remove 2 of the pins that have gone thru the other side of the tibia bone and caused damage to the tendons. She just got out of her wheelchair in October, and still in a full leg hinged brace, and using a cane as it was her goal to be off her crutches by the new year.

A brave woman she is and even I can see the pain she is in.

A quote from you when my friend Amy Whims asked for pain medication for her injuries. This is not an exact quote because I do not have a recorder at the time.

“Now you understand how people perceive living an alternative lifestyle leads to conclusions. You have been going this long without narcotics. When you come in here looking like that and asking for drugs I am lead to believe you are  going to sell them or use them for recreational purposes.”

Later after having left the room and coming back you them stated that you usually give 30 percocet for an operation but would give her 40 and your words:

“40 is all you get. You can sell them, party with them or use them but you wont be getting any more.”

This was said not only to your patient but to me, her friend who had driven 2.5 hours away from home to get her to the hospital.

—Amy and I met in early 2010 when we met at a photo shoot for our hearse club (Rain City Hearse Club) in Tacoma, Washington. I had just moved here because my husband was stationed out on Whidbey Island. I did not know anyone and felt alone. Reaching out through the web I found safe arbor with the hearse club. Amy and I became INSTANT pals and have since then kept steady contact. We now visit each other frequently and help each other with problems.  We marched together in the Seattle Gay Pride Parade in 2011, when I was just out of the hospital she came to stay with me, when I was lonely on a Halloween night she took me out to dance, when her fiance left her I was there for her. When life gets hard we both know we have someone to share the load.

Dr. Clawson, I agree with you. Using any type of drug, prescription or not, for recreational purposes is WRONG. What I do not agree with is your assumption that because those of us with piercings, tattoos, unnatural hair colors, etc. are drug users. Let me tell you a bit about one the “Alternative Lifestyle” woman you just INSULTED.

— I am a Marine Corps Daughter and Navy Wife. Born and raised on a military base in Southern California. I grew up pure American. For the past 4 year I have been supporting my husband in both deployment, shore, and sea duty as he protects this country so people like me have the freedom to do, say, be who/what they want.

— I am a Goth. I live my life a bit different from some. I own and drive a vintage Hearse, 99% of my clothing is black, I listen to music like NIN, Cruxshadows, Combichrist, Bauhaus, The Cure, Sisters of Mercy, Siouxie and the Banshees, Christian Death, The Mission, The Cult, NightWish, Dead Can Dance, Fields of the Nephilim, but I also listen to Classical Music and Broadway Show tunes.

— I am a small business owner. For the past 11 months since my first sale I have worked my fingers to the bone, stayed awake for days on end turning out custom ordered clothing and accessories for people and places as far away as Italy, Japan, and Australia. I learned to sew from my mother. I never went to fashion school. Everything I learn to do I teach myself. I have pushed and pulled and squeezed my family budget to make my home based business a success. It has gotten to the point where I have had to visit the emergency room because of lack of sleep, drinking too much coffee, stress, and developed carpel tunnel due to sewing but I am pushing on toward MY American Dream.

— I am a small town girl born and raised in a fundamentally christian (United Pentecostal Church International) single parent home in Twentynine Palms, California. My first 18 years of life were based on Jesus Christ and the King James Bible. My first book I ever read was Genesis: The first book in the Holy Bible.

—I am a proud supporter of Rabbit rescue. With both San Diego House Rabbit Society and Whidbey Island Rabbit Rescue. I am currently  fostering 4 rabbits before they can go up for adoption as well as caring for my own 2 house rabbits.

—I am a proud Member and Supporter of the LGBT equality movement and a proud supporter of Gothic Pride Seattle I fully believe that equality no mater age, race, gender, nationality should be freely available to EVERYONE.

I HAVE NEVER AND WILL NEVER USE DRUGS!

I have never touched a drug in my life, not even marijuana. I do not support in any way the use of drugs that are not medically prescribed or the recreational use of prescriptions. The fact that you assume people, like me, who live “alternative lifestyles” are going to use prescription drugs for recreation is both ignorant and prejudice. You assume we have piercings for attention or to show we don’t care about society at large.

What you do not know is: Each one of my facial piercings stands for every 10 sales I have made on my etsy store since I started my small business.

We may look different but,  We are only different if you don’t look past the surface. Amy is still so hurt that you insinuated that she would sell them and/or party with medication that she desperately needs. What you said was degrading on her moral character as well as insulting, as you based it on her appearance and lifestyle. You are not a lifestyle coach. You are a bone and joint Doctor.

You should be ashamed of yourself.

“The fabrics are lovely, dark and deep,
